Local Tree Surgeons You Can Rely On

Devon Tree Works operates from the Exmouth area, covering Budleigh Salterton, Topsham, Exeter, Woodbury, Lympstone, Sidmouth and the surrounding villages. Week-by-week routes are scheduled by area to keep travel efficient, often meaning shorter lead times when the team is already working nearby.

All tree work follows BS 3998 guidance and is tailored to species, age and site conditions. Every job starts with an agreed brief and specification, checks for permissions where needed (TPO or Conservation Area), and is scheduled around access and wildlife. Paths, beds and hard surfaces are protected throughout, and the site is left completely clean, with every scrap of green waste collected and removed.

Four Ways We Look After Your Trees

Watch a Crown Reduction Take Shape

A mature, healthy crown, full spread, before any work begins.

Deadwood and crossing limbs come out first, opening the canopy safely.

The crown is reduced evenly, true to BS 3998. The tree keeps its natural shape, just smaller.

Common Questions

Do I need permission to work on my tree (TPO / Conservation Area)?

If your tree has a Tree Preservation Order or sits in a Conservation Area, you may need consent from the Local Planning Authority. TPO work requires a formal application; Conservation Area work usually needs six weeks' notice. Urgent safety work on dead or dangerous trees is exempt but must be evidenced. We can check protection status, advise on what's allowed, and handle the paperwork and mapping for you.

Can you work during nesting season?

Many birds nest between March and August, though activity can occur year-round. We check for nests before and during work, and if an active nest is found, we delay or modify the work to avoid disturbance, in line with the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981.

Will you remove all the waste?

Yes. Green waste removal is included as standard. Arisings, chip and timber are collected, loaded and taken off-site. If you'd like to keep chip for beds or logs for seasoning, just ask, otherwise we leave the site tidy with hard surfaces blown down and pathways clear.

How do you price tree work?

Prices reflect the scope of work, size, height and spread, access and rigging needs, complexity, equipment required and waste volume. Permissions and any traffic or pedestrian management can also affect cost. Photos and a brief description help with fast estimates, and we're happy to visit where needed.

Do you use MEWP or rigging?

We choose the safest, least intrusive method for the site. Most work is completed by professional climbing and rope rigging to lower sections in a controlled way. Where access, tree condition or safety makes it preferable, we use a MEWP (cherry picker).

Are you insured and qualified?

Yes. Our operatives hold relevant qualifications (chainsaw use, aerial rescue, climbing, rigging) and Emergency First Aid. We work to BS 3998 guidance and site-specific risk assessments. Public liability insurance documentation is available on request, and we provide method statements where required.

How often should hedges be trimmed?

Most clients book once a year for a clean, formal finish; some prefer twice a year to keep lines extra crisp through the growing season. Leylandii and privet benefit from more frequent light trims but can hold a good shape on a one-to-two-times-yearly schedule. Laurel and photinia typically suit twice a year. Yew, beech and hornbeam usually hold their shape with one or two precise trims annually, often a single late-summer cut.

Can you significantly reduce hedge height?

Yes, where the species, condition and site allow. Some hedges, such as laurel and yew, tolerate reductions better than others, like leylandii. We advise on safe limits and may recommend staged reductions over one or two seasons for the best result.
